Mediation Skills for Managers:

Core Competency for Effective Leadership

Wallace Wilkins, Ph.D.
Tuesday - Wednesday, February 3-4, 2009

Course Description

Unresolved conflicts are among the most expensive hidden costs in modern organizations. Left to fester, conflicts block communication and impede program execution. This video-assisted seminar teaches busy managers how to prevent conflicts from escalating. You will learn what causes conflicts in teams, why they last so long, how to resolve them, and how to prevent recurrence. This seminar emphasizes practical, "how-to" methods that you can apply in everyday workplace situations to promote healthier, safer, more cohesive teams.

Step-by-step, managers leave the role of "problem-fixer" and move into the role of facilitator to help disputants create their own resolutions. Day One emphasizes specific steps that you can take to approach and resolve your own conflicts. Day Two emphasizes specific steps that you can take to resolve conflicts between other people. Ample breakout activities and behavioral practice enable you to begin mediating the very next workday. Strengthen your team, complete your projects, and carry your mission forward without aggravating disputes.

Learning Objectives

Develop and enhance the contributions you make to your organization by being able to:

• Prevent disputes from escalating into expensive grievances, litigation, or violence
• Increase communication and cooperation among team members
• Approach "dicey" situations confidently, rather than automatically avoiding them
• Proven unnecessary time delays
• Turn lose/lose situations into win/win outcomes
• Supercharge your leadership career with advanced, interpersonal skills
• Reduce unnecessary costs
• Resolve conflicts your very next workday
• Take much less workplace aggravation home with you

Your seminar experience will cover:

• How to identify the causes of a conflict
• When to mediate and when to use other supervisory interventions
• How to implement the four phases of successful mediation
• How to conduct preliminary meetings to prepare the disputants for mediation
• How to arrange an optimal setting for successful outcomes
• How to perform the three primary tasks of successful mediators
• How to approach and resolve your own conflicts without a third party mediator

Instructional Methods

Videotape observations of a professional mediator in action, lecturettes with group discussions, review of conflict scenarios, behavioral practice of mediation strategies, Q&A, small-group break-out sessions, case illustrations, participant workbooks, plus the take-home CD ROM, Resolve Workplace Conflicts - and plenty of humor!
