Pacific Northwest Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute

A collaboration between Cascade Executive Programs and the Nancy Bell Evans Center

February 8-13, 2009

"I want to thank you for the most transformative experience that I have been a part of in my 35 years in leadership roles. The adjectives that best describe it for me are: unique, timely, relevant, inspiring, rejuvenating, informative, educational, and worth every single moment. This was what I needed, when I needed it, and it took me to a whole new level in my leadership development."

Program Overview
The Pacific Northwest Nonprofit Leadership Institute ("the Institute") is a five-day residential program designed to enhance the strategic and visionary thinking of experienced nonprofit executives in the Pacific Northwest. Nonprofit leaders operate in a climate of continuous change, with new opportunities and challenges surfacing on a daily basis. Successful nonprofit executives must critically assess and capitalize on these internal and external forces while simultaneously enhancing the stability and effectiveness of their organizations and their work. There is rarely time for reflection or renewal.

In a retreat setting, participants will engage in an examination of their own leadership effectiveness and the deeper meaning of their work. The regional nature of the Institute will enable participants to build and sustain relationships with peers and instructors that will support them and their work in the years to come. Special attention will be given to self-care as well as renewing vision and passion for nonprofit work.

Program sessions will be led by a combination of academic faculty and experienced practitioners. Instructors will facilitate intellectually provocative sessions that expose participants to new insights and tools that will have a lasting impact. The use of case studies, peer consulting teams, 360-degree evaluations, group exercises, mock presentations, journaling, and panel discussions with local experts will create a highly participatory and multidimensional learning experience.

Learning Objectives
The Institute is designed to encourage participants to engage in deeper and higher-level thinking on the purpose and practice of their roles as organizational and community leaders. Participants will engage in a critical assessment of leadership challenges as well as their own leadership style and effectiveness. This high-level perspective will help build skills, confidence, and a commitment to visionary leadership.

Leadership will be taught in the context of the following key competencies:

• Thinking strategically
• Understanding your stakeholders and authorizing environment
• Enabling and securing support for change
• Inspiring others to perform
• Communicating and influencing effectively
• Fostering collaboration
• Using financial management in pursuit of strategic objectives
• Engaging and managing the board of directors
• Enhancing self-knowledge
