Dr. Leslie K. Breitner joined the faculty of the Evans School of Public Affairs in 2002. She is a Principal Lecturer and the Faculty Director of Cascade Executive Programs. Leslie teaches the MPA core budgeting and financial management course as well as public management, performance management, and nonprofit financial management. She is a faculty lead for the Executive Masters in Public Affairs program, and teaches courses in financial statement analysis, financial management, and performance management for Cascade at the Evans School.
Dr. Breitner received her Doctorate in Business Administration at Boston University's Graduate School of Management. Prior to moving to Seattle, Leslie taught graduate level financial management and public sector budgeting courses, and was involved in the Senior Executives in federal, state, and local government programs, at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. An experienced teacher in distance learning courses, she developed and taught the online financial management curricula for both the Kennedy School and Seton Hall University's Masters in Healthcare Administration program.
Leslie has taught and consulted to medical schools, teaching hospital, foundations, and nonprofit organizations and their boards, on issues related to financial management. She teaches funders how to read and interpret financial data to help inform their decision-making. Leslie is co-author of the popular accounting books Essentials of Accounting, 9th Edition and Essentials of Accounting Review, both published in 2006, with the late Professor Robert N. Anthony (Anthony and Breitner). She recently served as a Board member of Sustainable Seattle.
Leslie earned the Evans School Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence and the "Teacher of the Year" Award. She lives in Seattle with her husband Dr. John Breitner. They have five grown children, a dog named Sam, and love to fly fish the rivers of Montana.
