Stephen R. Rosenthal is professor of operations and technology management at Boston University. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, MS. from M.I.T., and BS from Brown University.
His research and consulting concentrate on the management of product and service innovation, technology strategy and enterprise leadership. Professor Rosenthal's publications include the books Managing Government Operations, Effective Product Design and Development, Software by Design, and Reaching for the Knowledge Edge, and his most recent articles have appeared in The Journal of Product Innovation Management, Sloan Management Review, Journal of Operations Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and Journal of Management Studies. His papers have won awards from the Academy of Management, Decision Sciences Institute, and Marketing Sciences Institute. At present he is working on issues of service innovation under a grant from the National Science Foundation, while teaching courses on Operations Strategy, Project Management, and Service and Product Design and Development.
Dr. Rosenthal's prior professional experience includes serving in New York City government both as Management Science Consultant in the Mayor's Office of Administration, and as Director of Operations Analysis in the Housing and Development Administration, Policy Analyst for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in Berkeley, CA., and Program Manager in the Division of Applied Research of the National Science Foundation.
At Boston University, Professor Rosenthal's administrative appointments include: Director, Boston University Center for Enterprise Leadership, Chair of the Operations and Technology Management Department, and Board Member, Boston University Charles River Campus Institutional Review Board. He has also held visiting faculty appointments at Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton.
He has served as consultant and executive trainer to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the Department of Public Welfare of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as well as many private sector companies.
Steve lives in Chestnut Hill, MA and Pomfret, VT with his wife Linda and dog Ruby, and enjoys tennis, skiing, hiking, and traveling.
