Executive Management Program Application

"Excellent integration of theory and practice. The curriculum, which includes thought provoking readings and lectures from veteran public servants, provided insights I could not have gained elsewhere; in fact, I frequently draw upon what I've learned in leading a public agency with complex financial and operating challenges. That I believe in this program is reflected in the fact that I have sent a number of my key managers, in whom I've observed not only higher skills, but greater dedication and energy."

- W. Michael Anderson, Executive Director, Washington State Ferries

Program Overview
The Executive Management Program (EMP) is a two-week, in-residence program for senior managers from a wide variety of federal, state, and local government agencies; special districts; and nonprofit organizations. Participants are immersed in examining complex managerial issues, rethinking their own roles and responsibilities, and developing the skills they need to be even more strategic and effective in their jobs.

Participants have relied on the EMP for more than 21 years to strengthen their professional abilities on a wide range of topics including effective communication, performance measurement, leadership competency, negotiations, the managerial environment, strategic marketing, and financial management.

Faculty members are recognized experts in the fields of public policy, leadership, and management. They lead intellectually provocative sessions that expose participants to new insights and provide analytical tools that have a lasting impact. Faculty use case studies, group exercises, mock presentations, personal evaluations, and panel discussions with experts to create a highly participatory and multidimensional learning experience.

A key component of the EMP is the benefit that participants gain from their peers in the classroom. The professional diversity of the participants enriches the learning experience, and their advanced level of experience provides a unique and invaluable opportunity to learn from one another in an open environment, exploring management and leadership issues and building relationships that last long after the program ends.
